On modern Linux kernels, it is also possible to create
"virtual network interfaces", i.e. to assign more that one
IP address to the same physical network interface. It should
be possible to run every IOC with its own virtual
interface/addess/hostname. But I have not tried that yet.

An interesting idea. Please send a summary of your experiences if you try
this.
We are running an EPICS Gateway in a Linux Heartbeat (http://linux-ha.org/)
configuration since a few months.
The gateway process runs on a virtual network interface on one linux server.
If the server dies, the gateway process fails over to another linux server using
the same IP address (again on a virtual network interface).
While switching from one server to the other the CA-clients loose connection,
but reconnect after a few seconds, as soon as the new gateway process is up.
We occasionally have gateway problems with old CA-clients running on VMS-Systems,
but I don't believe this is related to the virtual network interface.
