Nick--
We use edd/dm on RedHat 9 and experienced the same flicker as you describe.
By switching the color depth from 24 to 16 (in /etc/X11/XF86Config,
"DefaultDepth" and "Depth" under the "Screen" section) the flicker goes away.
The reduced color map does not affect us otherwise.
