Hi John,

we here aren't so much interested in audible alarms as we need to notify
people remotely, so we're doing it by email, like this:
alh -s /ukirtdata/epics_data/alhConfig/ufti.alhConfig &

where /ukirtdata/epics_data/alhConfig/ufti.alhConfig reads:

GROUP NULL ufti
CHANNEL ufti ufti:ls330:cdat
$STATCOMMAND HIHI echo "UFTI temperature exceeds 82K" | /usr/ucb/mail -s "UFTI temp. exceeds 82K" maren-ircam

basically, you can put any command into that STATCOMMAND line that your system
will execute, whether that's playing sound files or calling somebody on a
pager (or several) - or in our case sending email.

- We generally don't pay attention to the actual user interface at all, and it
sometimes runs remotely from my desk, some 30 or so miles removed from the
device that may trigger alarms. -

HTH,

Maren Purves

Efforts to implement the EPICS Alarm Handler from APS here at SNS have not been as straightforward as initially anticipated. In the case for some subsystems, the engineers are looking at alternative approaches that they consider to be more intuitive and easier to use. Maybe one solution should not be expected to fit all situations. Opinions about how alarms should be displayed, announced (audible warning systems), acknowledged, and logged cover a wide range of views. We are at a stage of implementation where we could benefit from the experiences of others.

A particular area of interest is the use of audible alarms. What is being used? How are they implemented?
