This actually isn't for real-time applications - we are
looking at a Java-based network-aware client for the
ChannelArchiver. In our preliminary design requirements
we gave rendering 2.5 out of a total 4 seconds time
budget from user request to final graph.

In your experience, how did rendering speed scale with plot
type and the sample size?

Hi Peregrine,

I've used JFreeChart (but only version 0.9.3, dunno what's the
latest).

Rendering speed isn't the greatest - it's ok for web-based
apps, but not for real-time displays.
