All: I did receive this nice reply from In Soo Ko:

=================== Dear Steve,

My staff informed me that there was a question about Korean visa for
ICALEPCS2003 at the EPICS tech-talk.

US citizens (Canadian and most European too) do not need Korean visa
when you come to Korea and staying less than 30 days. If you ask this
issue to Korean Consulates, they may answer differently (saying you need
a visa for research). This research case is often confused with a case
of sabbatical of staying several months or years period.

Whatever you do in Korea for 30 days, you can always claim that you are
a tourist. Please pass this information for concerning participants of
ICALEPCS2003.

See you soon at Gyeongju.

Best regards,

In Soo

The ICALEPCS'03 site page says "no visa needed" for US and most
European nationals for visits less than 30 days, however, a source
suggests that if you say you are "attending a conference" upon entry
you must (should) have business visa.
