Hi Bill,

It looks like the stringin record never posts monitors if the value has not changed.  

A couple of options:

- Make a simple database where the stringin record forward links to another record that does post monitors every time it processes.  You can put a monitor on that record, and whenever it posts an event then you know the stringin record has received new input, so you can read it.

- Use my generic serial record http://cars9.uchicago.edu/software/recSerial.html
  which always posts monitors on new input.  It only works with mpfSerial device support, however.
