A document describing the channel access protocol has been on the to-do list forever. As we are currently trying to put channel access in position to change the protocol, we have put it off even longer. The fact that we only have one person working on this - along with all problem reports, changes, bug fixes - the next version etc...., does not help. Jeff Hill has been author and stewart of this code from its inception. We have tried to get others involved. We have recently had some support from Ralph Lange on this effort to make a significant change in our communication abilities. To add resrouces requires a real commitment from the supporting institution that is typically hard to get. It seems that this is not one of the things that has been important enough for anyone to want to support.

At some point, a team of dedicated developers is going to be required to make the sort of "product" enhancements that would benefit the community in the long run. It is difficult to ask projects to dip into their funding to support the toolset in ways that are not dictated by the funding laboratory.

Hi Noboru,

I'm not sure if the information exists anywhere else but in the source code and with Jeff Hill. I don't recall
That is what I thought at first place.

(over ten years) seeing a document that describes the internals of the protocol - unless Jeff alluded to it in some collaboration meeting.
Is there any interest on such a document? Or a soruce code may be enough.
