If performance and latency are not issues, you may choose
to use linux on a PC. Version 3.14 can run both the I/O
interfaces and the operator software in the same box.
I suppose the real cost would be in replacing the I/O. If
you have VME I/O, then Till's suggestion to use RTEMS
seems the best approach.
