I just looked at a Moxa 4 port RS422 server that was floating around here.  I hooked it up to a Linux machine and it mapped the ports to the Linux tty ports as advertised.  I had borrowed this from someone trying this on a Windows PC and it seemed to work the same way mapping to COM ports in windows. 

In the short test I did things looked good.  I had no 422 devices to try though.  I have decided to try another deice from Digi (www.digi.com).  My first application is for a terminal server for IOCs.  the Digi model has an RJ45 port that is similar to the ports on a MVME172 and 2304 that we are using here.

As for playing in a hostile environment, I did this in my office.  Some may consider it hostile but I don't think this fits your definition.
