DUTIES:

The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center is seeking a Research Software Developer with a background in physics and/or electrical engineering for the SPEAR 3 Computer Controls group. The primary responsibility of this position is to collaborate in the development and implementation of an EPICS-based computer control system for the SPEAR 3 electron storage ring, which is presently under construction and will begin start-up operations in late 2003. The control system incorporates portions of the Unix-based EPICS tools with PowerPC IOCs running the VxWorks and RTEMS real-time operating systems and with elements of existing legacy VMS- and CAMAC-based control systems. Tasks include working with a senior software developer and other programmers to implement the new control system architecture, adapting existing complex system and application codes to the new system, and developing new real-time accelerator instrumentation and contr!

application programs. The software developer will work with accelerator physicists, engineers, operators and control system experts in implementing the EPICS control database and graphical operator interface menus, adding and integrating data analysis and accelerator and beam modeling programs into the control system, developing device control and other application programs, and documenting system software. Occasional on-call and shift work should be expected.

SKILLS:

A BS or advanced degree in computer science, physics, EE, or equivalent training, a minimum of 5 years professional experience is required as well as demonstrated expertise in real-time computer control system and application programming. Experience with EPICS control system implementation, the VxWorks real-time operating system, networking methods and protocols preferred. Expertise in C programming, Unix, and familiarity with X-Windows/Motif graphical programming required; knowledge of VMS highly desirable. . Other desirable areas of experience include CAMAC, VME and VXI hardware interface standards and the RTEMS real-time operating system. Must have good communication skills and be able to work independently and as a team member.
