I'm so embarrassed, I didn't even see that.

On further examanition my "bin/solaris-sparc-gnu/example" was linked
with a R3.14.0beta2 build that was built with 
base/configure/os/CONFIG_SITE.solaris-sparc-gnu.solaris-sparc-gnu file
specifying DEPLIB_DIRS of r3.14.0Beta1.  Once this was changed, R3.14.0beta2
rebuilt and my example rebuilt everything worked fine:

kamaole:iocexample> ../../bin/solaris-sparc-gnu/example st.cmd
Starting iocInit
