Here's a proposal for an extension to the compression
record:
o add a field "NP" that controls the rate that the
N-to-1 computations are performed. The record would
update min, max, median, or average (mean) every
NPth time it was processed.
o for backwards compatibility, the default value of
NP would be 0. This would be equivalent to NP=N.
o the behavior I need is obtained by setting NP=1.

Although the easiest way forward is to use an
existing compression record configured as a circular
buffer and feed it into an ANL waveform analysis
record (courtesy of John Maclean). This record computes
max, min, peak to peak, mean (but not median),
mean abs deviation, variance, standard deviation, and
FWHM in one go.
