For those that may want to know
The 'fixed' beam-line dedicated to treating tumors
of the eye, was brought on line April 1, 2002 by a team from MGH
and IBA. Eye treatments at the Harvard Cyclotron Laboratory were stopped a
month earlier and some clinical equipment was brought over. As of yesterday all
other treatments were stopped at HCL, which has been operational since
1954.
The first treatment room, with a gantry and patient
positioner system which allows the Proton beam to be directed at the patient
from almost any angle has been operational since November 8 2001.
NPTC has a 235 MeV Cyclotron, built by
IBA, capable delivering beam to: one of two Gantry
rooms or to one of three branch lines of the fixed beamline - of
which only the Eye-line is functional at present. Though the idea of using EPICS
for the control system was considered at different times, due to various -
including IBA business related - considerations the 'Therapy Control
System' for NPTC has been built using Talarian's RT Works suite of tools,
which was selected for the task ~1994.
