Subject: Event handling

I am looking for a way to trigger programs, scripts, etc. at the host side in response to PV value changes. I don't want to use the alarm handler for that.
What are other people doing there? At the moment I know only of the D0 stuff, which is a bit too "big" for my reqirements.
