We use similar approach.
We use Cisco 2500 and DEC server 900TM as a terminal server in our system.
A console port of IOC is connected to one of serial port on these
terminal servers.
Each  serial port have ether IP address (Cisco) or port number (DEC). So that
we can directly telnet to the console port. 
We open a xterminal window for each IOC console port and xterminal
program stores
received data into a log file. We have a Python script to open these
xterminal windows with proper setting with mouse clicks. 
These log files are fairly useful to identify the cause of trouble on IOC.
