The only draw back to this approach is that the knowledge of
the precision of the ADC is in the record. If you changed to
hardware to a different precision, it would affect the
conversion field.
On the other hand, the device support would no longer need
to do the conversion.
There is also a benefit to add the field in the record for
the voltage.
What about mamp signals? Would we also put this into volts
or would we add a field that is the units of power in the
readback? Volts, mamps etc....?
Perhaps a upwardly compatible approach would be to add a
different record type. This approach would break all device
support conversions.
There is a precedence. There are 4 different record types
that talk to hardware for binary data - bi, mbbi,
mbbiDirect, longin. This would just mean that there would be
two different device support for analog inputs.
Write the chapter for the record reference manual and put it
into the distribution when you are done - whoever takes this
one. It seems straight forward and useful.
