Harvey,
I had a similar job for about 300 TC's. I needed to
digitize them at 100 Hz so chose a CAMAC multiplexor &
transient digitizer solution (old, free modules are cheap!).
But before I made that decision, I was strongly looking into
an HP solution, the 34970A. It is a fancy DMM with local
data logging and software. It has GPIB and rs-232
interface. I think you can connect 60 TC per DMM, ~$2,500.

upgrade. There will be about 40 TCs on 18 girders
distributed around the 230m ring circumference.

second intervals. We have a couple of quotes from PLC
vendors, but they are fairly expensive.

accomplish our task? Of course the aim is to get the
temperatures into an IOC.
