As currently implemented, the AI record does the smoothing calculation in
the convert() function.  This has the side effect that smoothing is applied
only for Raw Soft Records, while it is bypassed for Soft Records (no
conversion).

As smoothing is in fact applied to VAL after the conversion, it would be
easy (and appropriate IMO) to extract the smoothing calculation from
convert() and move it to process().
