The code in xgif.c (dm2k) and dmXgif.c (dm) look amazingly similar. As Deb said, they are undoubtedly from the same source. But the dm2k works with the new format .GIF.  If someone had the time to play, it looks almost like a slam dunk to move and adapt the dm2k code. I suppose the same could be said for the medm code, but I haven't looked.

First a disclaimer:  though I'm the original author of dm, I haven't officially
supported it for quite some time :-)
John Faucett just reported the same problem.  I haven't actually used the gif
feature for quite awhile.  I think Andrew is likely right about the format
issue.  The gif code was initially "borrowed" from medm and modified for use 
with dm. I'm guessing the newer version of gif support could be "borrowed" from
medm and used to upgrade the code.  I can't promise to get to it any time soon
unfortunately, but will let you know if I do.
