For whatever reason, the compiler is giving up the ghost as follows:

This was working fine a few weeks ago when I went to work on something
else.  It looks like the preprocessor is dying when it's called, but I
don't have a clue why.

Does this ring a bell with anybody?  The unix-guru and I have been messing
with this all day.  Suggestions?
