I wanted to point out that there is a work-around when the "Open" dialog is
used. It was incorrect (and unintentional) to imply that other mechanisms
for opening displays did not exhibit the same behavior.

In our production environment, we use related displays exclusively also.
However, we have all the displays in one directory, and MEDM is run via an
alias that does a cd into that directory first. When the display file to
be opened is in the current directory, the filename is used directly,
without adding full path to it, so the icon name is just the filename.

If the file is opened using EPICS_DISPLAY_PATH, or by specifying a full
path, then you get the full path in the icon name.

The X-server has nothing to do with it (and neither does the window
manager). Icon names and window titles for Motif shells must be set by the
application, unless you want the default, which is the application name.
If MEDM didn't explicitly set them, the windows/icons would all be named
"medm".

The problem is simply that MEDM is setting the icon name to the full path,
instead of stripping it down to just the file name first, as is done for
the window title.
