Hi Folks,

a first alpha release of a general gpib support for epics is now
avaliable for download at

http://www-csr.bessy.de/control/SoftDist/gpib/gpib.html

It supports the gpib interfaces from the old driver in base and
additionally HP's lan-gpib gateway. As far as the lan-gpib gateway is
concerned, everything seems to work fine.

Unfortunately I have neither the hardware nor the necessary experience
to test the low level drivers for the other gpib interfaces (meaning
that those parts are *completely untested*). The code for them is
virtually identical to (i.e. copied from) the stuff from base.
Nevertheless, it is almost definitely broken somewhere. At least
everything compiles ok and runs up to the point where the driver's init
method is called by iocInit.

It would be great if people who are familiar with the old gpib support
in base could help by downloading the stuff and trying it out (or even
better yet, fix it and send me the changes). It should be possible to
use existing device support modules without source code changes, though
they must be recompiled of course. The only thing to be done differently
is that each gpib link must be configured individually by calling the
appropriate drvXyGpibConfig function from the startup file.

There is no documentation yet :( I will provide some a.s.a.p.

There are some design questions where I'm not exactly sure I did the
right thing. I'll be glad to here comments.

Ben

P.S.: It'd be nice if someone could provide the missing information on
the web page, i.e. manufacturer and model numbers of bitbus and
ip-carrier hardware.
