don't know if this helps, but some observations to contribute
from here:

I found in one application that not only did I have to set it to CPP
but also had to explicitly put
<name of input record> CPP NMS
into the val(in) field of the hardware input for the input link
to get it to pick up the value.

I found that this sometimes lies, or at least appears to to me :-)
(indicated in my case by the fact that a status string appeared on
a dm screen that this device doesn't have - something was clearly
trampling on something there)
