Hi Bob,
I think that we do not necessarily have to use one _or_ another.
I would like to use the best of all worlds. There are really nice tools
available in SDDS.
If someone - like us - would like to use them it would be nice to be able to
read SDDS data from both sides:
- the archive viewer
- the SDDS tools
This could be archieved if the archive engine could write data in SDDS
format. - Which actually only means that you add an SDDS header to your
binary data. ( In our case: one file for each record/month)
See the ideal world of archiving here:
http://www-mks.desy.de/projects/archiving/Structure/structure-engine.htm
We are going to convert all our archived data from VMS to UNIX. The UNIX data
will be written with an SDDS header which does not add much ovehead, but adds
a lot of (SDDS) functionality.
We hope that we'll come to an agreement with Kay Kasemir to add a layer to
the Channel Archiver to allow different types of output data.( i.e. ARR and
SDDS - Oracle??)
Regards
Matthias
