The Argonne/APS Controls and Computing group has an opening for an
EPICS Application Engineer to specify, design, develop, test, document
and maintain control system hardware and application software in
support of the APS with particular emphasis on supporting the APS power
supplies and the power supply upgrade effort. APS has approximately
2000 individually controlled +/- 150A and 400 Amp. power supplies.

Requirements:

Develop hardware and software in the EPICS real time environment using
UNIX (Solaris), X-Windows, Motif, C and C++ and a real-time kernel.
Should have experience in programming and systems integration with time
critical or distributed control applications. The candidate must also
have experience with distributed systems using TCP/IP and field buses,
writing instrument and hardware-related drivers, hardware interface
routines and device drivers for VxWorks-based processor boards. A
knowledge of digital signal processing, and modern power supply
techniques and OS9 is very desirable.

Duties:

The individual will meet with engineers, physicists, technicians, and
operators to determine application requirements. Document application
requirements, design, implementation, testing, troubleshooting and
usage. Develop and upgrade existing applications for control system
data acquisition, retrieval, and visualization. Work as a member of a
team tasked with control system application development, follow all
team procedures and standards, and interface with other EPICS
collaboration developers to ensure applications are portable and
sharable with other EPICS sites. Must be available for off hours
on-call support and maintenance for 24-hour operations.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

Masters Degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Computer
Engineering or the equivalent combination of education, experience and
specific training. Five or more years experience developing real-time
system application software for control, data acquisition, retrieval,
and visualization, preferably in an EPICS environment. Three or more
years experience in developing applications in C/C++ in a UNIX
environment. Experience using X-Windows/Motif is desirable. Experience
in EPICS, UNIX, C++, familiarity with Solaris and LINUX, X-windows,
VxWorks and OS9, as well as standard digital interface protocols (VME,
field buses, TCP/IP, GPIB, and RS232) is desirable. Demonstrated
ability to successfully complete complex programming efforts in a
timely manner, interfacing directly with a team of scientists,
engineers, and computer professionals.

Argonne National Laboratory is one of the United States Department of
Energy's largest energy research centers, with an annual operating
budget of about $480 million supporting more than 200 research
projects. Argonne was the nation's first national laboratory. Today,
the laboratory has about 4,500 employees, including about 1,775
scientists and engineers, of whom about 800 hold doctorate degrees.

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) is a third-generation synchrotron
x-ray source that provides super-intense x-rays for basic and applied
research in materials science, biology and medicine, chemistry,
physics, geology, and environmental science. The APS was built by the
U.S. Department of Energy as a national user facility. The APS control
system includes more than 175 IOCs containing more than 300,000 PVs.
