OK, thanks for the fix.  I notice that our gateway process has been up
(no freezing, no restarts) since July 28!  However, it is taking a lot
of CPU probably because the BaBar clients are seething with unresolved
PVs (I still need to verify this).  I'll do one of your suggestions to 
at least prevent these PVs from going past the gateway onto our PEPII 
system.
