OPIers,
Since the topic of divergent OPI's has again arisen,
I'd like to encourage the community to avoid the
same problem in the Java language.
We are continuing to develop a Java based OPI with
DM/MEDM like capabilities. One major difference
facilitated by Java is the ability for all sites to
write their own widgets and seamlessly integrate
them into the display program. We could
exchange widgets by mailing each other java
source files, and updating a simple list (or
putting the file into the correct directory).
We started this work with JDM (Java DM) with
Java 1.0.2, and are now making a Java beans version
using Java 1.1.7, and will migrate that to swing
when Java 2 is well supported by browsers. Using
a bean based environment makes it nearly trivial
to have a programmable OPI (custom, arbitrary code).
If you would like to join a discussion of this topic,
email me and we'll find an appropriate list to carry
this forward.
Regards,
Chip
