At TRIUMF-ISAC we are just implementing the following approach:
A) We are using a serial server from data comm for business inc.
(www.dcbnet.com) which talks Telnet. As our IOCs are pretty scattered in
location and have ground separation requirements, we use one server per
IOC. Cost is approx. $500 CDN per server ($330 US). Not cheap, but
relative to the IOC .... This gives us boot monitoring and soft boot.
B) As for hard boots, we are developing a VME board which monitors crate
voltages, temperatures, fan operation and can provide a reset to the VME
crate. These boards are connected on their own fibre-optics CAN-bus
network, so that each IOC on the system has the possibility to monitor
the health of all other IOCs. Crate reset commands will be given over
CAN-bus. There will be a detailed paper at the upcoming ICALEPCs.
Note that the number of IOCs on our system is small, six at the moment
expected to grow to about 10 during the next year.
