Postdoctoral position
Brookhaven National Laboratory

The PHOBOS Heavy Ion Research group at BNL invites
applications for a postdoctoral research associate
position, starting Fall 1999. PHOBOS is a detector at the
Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) facility soon to be
commissioned at BNL. The experiment is designed to allow a
relatively unbiased look at these collisions that are
expected to produce the highest energy densities ever
accessible in the laboratory for volumes that are
significantly larger than a hadron. These collisions may
result in a QCD phase transition, leading to the
restoration of chiral symmetry and/or the deconfinement of
quarks. The PHOBOS detector is expected to have the largest
event rate (300-600 Hz) and the largest event-by-event
phase space coverage of any detector at RHIC, measuring
charged particle multiplicity as a function of azimuthal
angle and pseudorapidity over a pseudorapidity range of 11
units. In addition, our spectrometer allows us to
momentum-analyze and identify particles at midrapidity
down to transverse momenta of 15-35 MeV/c.

Our group responsibilities include facilities, beampipe,
online systems (DAQ, slow controls, trigger logic...),
production offline software, and some management functions.
The successful candidate will be expected to play a
significant role in all aspects of the online systems as
well as the physics analysis of PHOBOS. Experience in C++,
ROOT, EPICS, & Labview is highly desirable.

Interested candidates should send a curriculum vitae and
arrange for at least three letters of reference to

or [email protected]. In order to ensure full
consideration, the materials should be received by July 12,
1999, although applications will be accepted until the
position is filled. BNL is an equal opportunity employer
committed to work force diversity.
