Experimental Physics and
Industrial Control System

I need to communicate with a simple ethernet device (from the ioc, of course)
with a minimal amount of protocol overhead (which means no TCP/IP).  The 
ethernet node is a "home brew", so it can be taught a simple protocol. I'm
sure this has been done numerous times before, so I'm looking for some
existing code that would give me a head-start. 

Any suggestions ?
