 Dear All,

On February 27th 1999, the Gemini North Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii
reached the important milestone of Engineering First Light.

At this time, we were successfully running our hierarchical control system,
based on EPICS 3.12.2 with our added "Gemini" extensions.
The control of the telescope is achieved on a command and action-complete
basis with the top-level Telescope Control System initiating the commands
 to 6 lower-level systems.

All 7 individual systems are EPICS based and besides the hierarchical nature
of the overall system, there are many interfaces between the 6 lower-level
 systems.

In addition to the control system, we have a further EPICS interface to
our interlock system which is responsible for monitoring the status of
the many interlock events which can be generated on the telescope.

During the past year, we have been very busy integrating these systems
with one-another and with the hardware for the first time. This
represents the culmination of many years of work on these systems with
the original design and implementation of each component
having come from many countries and many groups around the World.

Our goals for the future are to move to faster PPC based processors, Tornado
 and EPICS 3.13.1.

On behalf of everyone working for the Gemini Project and those who have worked
on the many components of the control system, I would like to thank the
collaboration for the invaluable help and support which has made this
 all possible.

 Best Wishes,

 Andy
