To all EPICS users:
We are trying to cut down on network traffic at APS and have found out
that MANY iocs outside of APS are trying to log to the APS server phoebus
on port 7004. This is because a definition in base/config/CONFIG_SITE_ENV
sets the default value for EPICS_IOC_LOG_INET to phoebus' inet number
164.54.8.167. Our firewall prevents access but the firewall is receiving all
the log messages.
You can tell if your ioc is trying to log to phoebus by issuing the ioc
command "epicsPrtEnvParams".
Therefore, if ioc logging is not implemented at your site, I would like to
ask you to help by implementing the following changes -
1) Remove the reference to phoebus in your CONFIG_SITE_ENV file.
Before your next build of EPICS base please modify the CONFIG_SITE_ENV
file and change the definition of EPICS_IOC_LOG_INET to
EPICS_IOC_LOG_INET=
2) Disable logging on your iocs
Ioc logging can be disabled by placing the command line
iocLogDisable=1
in your startup command file (st.cmd) before issuing iocInit.
The reference to phoebus will be removed in the next EPICS base release.
Thanks in advance,
Janet
