Unfortunately there are in fact two independent and parallel developed
versions of medm that are distributed and supported.
Having two diverging versions of medm is not a desirable situation for the
user community. Instead of giving attention to lengthy comparisons we at
BESSY prefer proposals concerning how a merge of the `USA-medm' (APS) and
the `Euro-medm' (DESY/CERN/BESSY) back to one common `canonical' medm could
be achieved.
Back-incorporation is no more feasible on the source code level, hard on
the level of specific branch debugging and platform independency, but
doable on the level of common functionality. Since in the Euro-medm new
types of functionality are implemented (faceplate editor, nesting of
displays, color and graphic rules...) the Euro-medm is a superset of
USA-medm at least with respect to the ADL files. TMHO the natural way of a
merge would be to fold back the APS developments into the European version.
At the last EPICS meeting in Los Alamos BESSY offered to reimplement all
EXECUTE functionalities of the current APS version into Euro-medm. With a
given set of ADL files (generated with and for the USA-medm) the resulting
medm will then behave identical to the APS version and could seamlessly
replace the former version.
In the mean time the most apparent items are already functional in the
recent productional European version. Furthermore Jlab offered to provide
CDEV support and XRT/Graph replacement for Euro-medm too - at the same time
expressing clear interest in a (merged and) common version.
What would help now are:
- statements from APS and the user community that the proposed
procedure is in principle acceptable ... or inacceptable and
suggest an alternative.
- tests of the Euro-medm that help us find out where EXECUTE
behaves (inacceptable) different to USA-medm ... so we can
fix it and achieve what we promised to do.
Best regards, Roland.
