Seen this too many times ...

suggestions:
- check if you have an .rhosts file, and if the host that you are 
booting from is in it
- check that you DON't have a line
setenv EPICS_CA_AUTO_ADDR_LIST "NO"
(and a subsequent  EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST that doesn't include both host
and crate) in your .login file
- check that your startup script doesn't have access restrictions in it
(but that, by itself, would make it halt later if I remember correctly)
