I think many people in the epics community may be interested to know
that there exists a version of Linux for many of the Motorola MVME cards
that we use for IOCs.
Information and downloads are available from:
http://www.sleepie.demon.co.uk/linuxvme/index.html
I have installed the port successfully on an MVME167 and an MVE162 card
and have been using it for about a month with no problems. Hardware
requirements are detailed on the site above.
I have successfully compiled and tested the epics client libraries from
R3.13.0beta11 and will shortly move up to R3.13.0beta12.
It is based on the Debian 2.0 Linux distribution so there are a huge
number of packages available for it - all those that I have tried so far
have worked - including such unlikely items as apache and the gimp!!!
Kernel versions available are 2.0.33, 2.1.90 and 2.1.106. Kernel modules
are supported.
There is a /dev/mennc device which can be 'mmap'ed to provide access to
the physical memory of the MVME card. So far, I have been able to
control Joerger VSC8 & VSC16 scaler cards and am starting work on an OMS
VME8 motor driver.
I believe that this system could be an excellent alternative to
vxWorks/Hideos etc.

Guy Jennings
