The limit is currently PV_NAME_SZ=28 characters. This limit is in the database.
There is also a restriction in the CA client library of MAX_STRING_SIZE=40. 
Since the new C++ CA server library does not impose any PV name length restrictions
and because I suspect that Marty will soon be eliminating the database restrictions
I will replace the 40 character limit in the CA client library with a 1000 character limit.
