Scientific Associate for IPNS Data Acquisition
IPNS has an opening for a full-time Scientific Associate for data
acquisition. The basic purpose of the position is to maintain, operate,
and upgrade the IPNS data acquisition and detector systems, and
coordinate chopper control system operations. The successful candidate
will join a team involved with upgrading existing instruments and in
developing new IPNS instruments.
IPNS is in the process of replacing the current VAX-based data
acquisition system with a new UNIX/Ethernet-based data acquisition
system. The new system uses the Experimental Physics Industrial Control
System (EPICS) software developed by Argonne and Los Alamos. EPICS is
now in use at a number of laboratories.
Qualification Highlights:
The successful candidate will have considerable knowledge in use and/or
management of UNIX computer systems plus experience in the installation,
operation, maintenance and upgrading of equipment and instruments. Good
knowledge is desired in working in laboratory user facilities and,
specifically, around neutron facilities. Considerable skill is required
in using time and resources in order to ensure safe and reliable
operation of facilities and equipment, and in working well with other
members of the operations groups. Good skill is needed in keeping
facility records, collecting and analyzing data, specifying and
obtaining new equipment, maintaining spare parts in order to ensure
reliable operation, and communicating information and ideas to
scientific users. This level of knowledge and skill is typically
achieved through a BS or MS in a related field (engineering, physics,
computer science) and several years of experience (MS 0-2 years, BS 2-5
years) in related equipment or experimental activities.
