Dear Yujong,
I am only using Linux as a client workstation. This does not require
VxWorks. I still use a Sun Solaris machine to build EPICS applications
for the IOC. On the Sun (a sparcStation) I use VxWorks 5.2 dev kit.
This is probably also available on x86 Solaris but you may have some
work to do to compile EPICS.
Actually someone else installed that but I do use it. On the client
side (ie Linux) I have built quite a few of the apps (MEDM, StripTool,
...) and use these to interface with the workstation.
Redhat Motif comes from RedHat. This is also where I get my Linux from.
See www.redhat.com.
I have used a variety of x86 Machines w/ Linux. I have one running as
an X-terminal that is only a 386-SX16. I recommend getting as much PC
as your budget allows so that you can better utilize it. I really
recommend a Pentium class as a minumal starting point unless you simply
cannot lay your hands on anything else. As with any other computer
question memory never hurts either.
I hope that this helps,
John
