To write string through using "caput" you have to use the "-s" option,
e.g.
kao 264: caget chademoai2.SCAN
chademoai2.SCAN Passive
kao 265: caput -s chademoai2.SCAN .2 second
Old : chademoai2.SCAN Passive
New : chademoai2.SCAN .2 second
Just type caput it should give you the on-line command syntax
about caput.
