Since it sounds like someone will be working on the Symbol Device support,
may I comment ...

I find the derivation of the vxWorks symbol name from the PV name somewhat
constraining, especially since our PV naming convention uses several ":".

May I suggest that the Symbol device support also allow INSTIO device type
where the parameter string is simply the vxWorks symbol name.

Something like ...

    device(ai,CONSTANT,devAiSymb,"vxWorks Variable (from PV)")
    device(ai,INSTIO,devAiSymb,"vxWorks Variable (Specified)")

Also, I would like to see bi/bo support as well, in order to turn on flags
and such ...
