Mauro,

The CAMAC EPICS support consists of 3 parts:

    1) a library of CAMAC standard routines (ESONE / ANSI)

    2) EPICS device support for a number of records, calling only the
standard routines

    3) an EPICS driver for the Hytec serial highway VME card which uses
the standard routines
plus a little bit more to integrate with EPICS

The original CAMAC support done at Jefferson Lab consisted of only the
first two components,
and included libraries (1) for both the Hytec VME card and the Kinetics
custom parallel bus
(3922?). At that time part (2) was completely independent of the
hardware interface used, and
only depended upon a correct implementation of the standard routines.
This standard library
also exists for a large number of CAMAC interfaces, and someone within
the high energy physics
community has probably written one for the 3988 card (even if not, it
should not be too difficult).

I cannot guarantee that the evolution of the CAMAC support has fully
maintained this isolation into
hardware independent device support, and hardware dependent
implementation of the standard
routines, but if not, it is probably close. Mark Rivers uses the
generic CAMAC record also with
the KSC2917 card, so it is probably OK. email him as: Mark Rivers
