 The near-infrared group at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer extraterrestrische
 Physik (MPE) seeks to recruit for the Laser-Guide Star Groupe a graduated
 
                    REAL-TIME-SOFTWARE ENGENEER.
 
 This position is available starting 1. April and lasts presently
 till the end of the year 1998.

The MPE and MPIA (Max-Planck-Institut fuer Astronomie) are currently 
commissioning and operating the ALFA adaptive optics system at the 
3.5m telescope on Calar Alto, which includes a sodium line laser guide star.
The system is fully operational. First successful measurements with the 
Guide Star and the Adaptive Optics locking on it have already been carried out. 

Required is the maintenance and improvement of the Laser Guide Star
software and its adaptation due to instrumental re-arangements.
Applicants are required to be familiar with:
 UNIX, real time OS, software developement to distributed systems,
 X-window programms, VME bus and interfacing industrial controls, C, C++
preference:
 solaris, VxWorks, OOA/OOD, TCP/IP, EPICS.
English (some German or Spanish is adventageous).
The Laser Guide Star Groupe is based at the MPE in Garching/Munich in
southern Germany. Frequent trips (1 to 2 weeks each) for observing runs 
at the Calar Alto telescope close to Almeria in southern Spain are required.
