At the APS we have 16 different groups running beamlines using EPICS. Each
needs to upgrade to the next version of EPICS and specific EPICS records
according to its own schedule. If I write a specific EPICS application, for
example an MCA display program which talks to the EPICS MCA record, my
application may well need to know what version of the record it is talking to.
New fields may have been added only after a certain release of the record,
etc. Have a VERS field would allow applications to be upgraded even if the
IOC has not yet been upgraded.
