Hey Paul,

I know of at least three different techniques for showing "trended" data. Each
is appropriate depending on what you are "trending".

1) Both display tools (medm and edd/dm) have a strip chart widget. This is
handy for those items you know ahead of time that people will want to
trend frequently. Call up the display, the trend begins.

2) StripTool, latest one done at TJNAL. This is handy for trending things
"on the fly" without generating an medm display. Drag the PV to the
   strip tool, the trend begins.

Both of these approaches have the disadvantage that the trend data begins when
the Unix application is started.

3) Collect a history of the data in the ioc using a "compress" record in
circular buffer mode. Display the buffer using a normal Cartesian plot in
medm. This approach is appropriate for a small set of PV's that you want
history of even when a strip tool is not running (e.g. call up an medm
display and see whether the vacuum burped 20 minutes ago.).

The next step beyond #3 is what we would label "archiving" ... but THAT's
   another topic !
