There are several Collaborative Access Teams at the
APS that are using Koyo programmable logic controllers
marketed through PLC Direct. Their new catalog has two
new offerings that may be of interest to the EPICS and
beamline communities. PLC Direct is now shipping an Ethernet
Base Controller for their 205 series of PLC's. This controller
takes the place of the CPU and allows a computer to control devices in the
backplane using IP or IPX via 10-Base-T networking cable. You
can only access binary I/O and analog I/O with the EBC.
However, one can have remote binary and analog inputs and outputs
in a stand alone DIN mountable controller. PLC Direct's prices
are extremely competitive. Just as an example, lets say you needed
a few binary/analog/input/output/relay modules, one configuration might
be:

9 Slot Base $161.00
EBC Controller $249.00
16 Point Output Module $ 71.00
16 Point Input Module $ 69.00
8 Point Relay Module $ 80.00
8 Channel Analog Input $194.00
   Module (12 bit)
2 Channel Analog Output $139.00
   Module (12 bit)
Filler modules for
remaining 3 ports @ $ 15.00
  $5 apiece
                       ---------------
                            $981.00
$ are US dollars

By the end of the year, they claim that they will be shipping
an ENET module which is an ethernet communication module that can
be used to talk to a PLC system. We at DND will be revamping the
communications on the beamline to take advantage of these new products.
The PLC direct web site claims that an ENET module will also be available
for the 405 PLC series as well.
