Well since this topic was brought up ....
We in xfd operations are not using alh at all.
Instead I have a perl program which has direct channel access monitoring ( for example) all the water flow PV in 40 front ends ( It actually monitors the SEVR field) when one of them goes into either a minor or major alarm the perl program, reads a few more fields like HIHI HIGH LOW LOLO and the VAL and then sends a mail to the alpha numeric pagers about the major or minor alarm conditions and all the associated values.

I will be posting my perl channel access library in the distribution one of these days.... ( its been working for atleast 6 months now)....
