I don't think the FAQ's explanation to be sufficient, either. I'm sure the
reads are via nfs (they work with rlogin disabled, we never use ftp
access - no password in the nvram).

nfsAuthUnixShow() tells me exactly what I want to see: Machine, uid and gid
match the ids on the host machine. For read access, the access bits of file
and directory work exactly as expected. Same is for write access using the
"real" (mounted) path. Only write access using the soft-linked path fails -
regardless of any mode bits (i.e. setting the directory to drwxrwxrwx
causes writes to fail).
