There is a frequency based archiver that is ready for alpha testing. There
is a description of the frequency archiver and the retrieval routines available
on the WWW at http://www.atdiv.lanl.gov/aot8/epics/archiver/archiv_1.htm
Basically, the frequency archiver takes data on a given period, buffers it
locally and dumps it to disk at another period. It supports all data types and
arrays of data types. It uses monitors to obtain channel access data, so
slow archiving of fast signals may use an inordinate amount of network bandwidth.
The archiver has been tested with as many as 1,000 signals, archived at 2 Hz.
Tests show some loss of data with 1,000 signals sending monitors at 10 Hz and
being archived at 2 Hz on a SPARC 10. There are two viewers that currently
interface to the frequency data: XARR produced at JLAB by Chris Larrieu that
has been in production use there and a Java based viewer being developed
at LANL by Stuart Bowling that is also in alpha test. Neither viewer will allow
you to browse through archived arrays.

*The frequency archiver will archive the index of an enumerated field - but not keep
the associated strings - which makes it of limited use in this case.

Please contact me if you are interested in running this archiver. Experienced UNIX
and EPICS users would be best for this first set of field tests.

	Thanks,
	Bob
