Subject: Capfast symbols

We have received a request from Phase Three for the EPICS CapFast symbols
and menus we use. Phase Three wants to begin distributing these as part
of CapFast. There are a couple of issues I need resolved before I can
comply with this request:

1) Can we give the symbols to Phase Three or are they copyrighted
or protected as part of the EPICS consortium? Certain we (the
Gemini Project) didn't write the vast majority of them, so we
don't want to be the ones to give them away.

2) Do we even want to give them to Phase Three? There could be lots of
headaches in trying to keep their distribution in sync with EPICS'.
On the other hand, it might simplify the CapFast setup.

3) How do we fix several of the symbol problems with the existing
distribution of symbols (extensions/src/edif/lib/sym)? There are
symbols without records (e.g., waveout) and records without symbols
(e.g., scan, wait). There are symbols that need to be fixed up.
I can compile a list if people are interested.

4) Whose to say that our version of the symbols are the best? We've
made some modifications to the existing symbols. Following the lead of
Nick Rees (JACH), we've turned on all NPP/NMS properties beside
the link fields. We've added the property "name:$(top)$(I)"
to all symbols. We've moved the default location of properties
around. We've created our own symbols for some missing ones.

5) Ditto for the menus.

6) Is there additional work needed for the Capfast symbols in 3.13?
We use 3.12.2, so anything we give Phase Three will only be valid
for that release.

Please let me know what you think. I'm willing to do some work on
this, but want some input. I've been told that Johnny Tang is
working on a web page for the symbol distribution--would this be a
better way to distribute than giving them to Phase Three?

Thanks,
bret
