SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMMER III / Job Req.: 17166 rev. 3/25/97

DUTIES:

The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory at the Stanford Linear
Accelerator Center is seeking a Scientific Programmer III with a
background in physics and/or electrical engineering for the Accelerator
Development and Controls group. The primary responsibility of this
position is to assist in the development an improved computer control
system for the SPEAR electron storage ring and its Injector facility that
may incorporate portions of Unix-based EPICS with elements of existing
VMS- and CAMAC-based control systems. Tasks include working with a
senior software engineer and other programmers to implement the new
control system architecture, adapting existing complex system and
application codes to the new system, and developing new real-time
accelerator instrumentation and control application programs. The
programmer will work with accelerator physicists, engineers, operators
and control system experts from other laboratories to implement graphical
operator interface menus, adding and integrating data analysis and
accelerator and beam modeling programs into the control system,
developing device control and other application programs, documenting
system software, and generating technical reports. Occasional on-call and
shift work should be expected.

SKILLS:

A minimum of a BS in computer science, physics, EE, or equivalent
training, a minimum of 5 years professional experience, with demonstrated
experience and expertise in real-time computer control system and
application programming down to the driver assembly language level.
Expertise in C and Fortran programming, the Unix operating system, and
familiarity with X-Windows/Motif graphical programming required;
knowledge of VMS highly desirable. Experience with EPICS, the VxWorks
real-time operating system, networking methods and protocols (TCP/IP,
DECNet) preferred. Other desirable areas of experience include CAMAC,
VME and VXI hardware interface standards. Must have good communication
and writing skills and must be able to work independently and as a team
member in the group.
